This programme includes books, DVDs with stories and songs, interactive games, notebooks of activities and stickers. “Ben &amp; Bella” are two adorable characters accompanying the children and teaching them English in an amusing way. Ben has an American accent and Bella a British accent, and, according to information by the <em>Early Learning Group</em> (the German distributor) the children can learn more than 1,000 words in a playful way and without a professor.</p>

<p>Interesting is the structure of the DVDs which is segmented into different subjects of basic vocabulary: like the farm, the circus, the zoo. And also within each DVD there is a good structure: an animated cartoon story, a story with actors and another section with songs, which include Karaoke versions. In addition there is also a special DVD that accompanies a story book also structured by subjects, which includes the reading of the story. Unfortunately a single CD with the audio-story does not exist. This would be a great improvement! Interesting also would be to have access to stories as Apps.</p>

Many of them educate their children bilingually, others introduce the learning of a second language – but with less intensity as in bilingual education – early on with their children.</p>
<p>Children which are in contact with a second language at an early age, bilingual or not, require an affective emotional tie with a person that teaches the language. The parents of these children also lean on books, CDs and DVDs to intensify the stimulation in the second language.</p>
<p>Nowadays there are new alternatives available in addition to the traditional materials like books, CDs, DVDs. These are the so-called “Podcast”.</p>

<p>Podcasts are electronic files that can be downloaded for free from the web, often in a free subscription form so that the latest episodes are always at hand for you. Podcasts exist in audio or audio-visual format. Podcasts can be professional or homemade. Podcasts can be seen / listened to on the PC, the TV (when it is connected to the Internet) or in systems like Ipod or other MP3 players.</p>
<p><span id="more-725"></span>Podcasts can contain short songs, films, stories and more. Today you can find great variety of Podcasts in English. In German more and more material is available, and also in Spanish, although here the selection is still limited.</p>

<p>For kids there are interesting Podcasts which support the education of a second language at an early age. This holds especially true when obtaining materials in the second language becomes difficult in the country where you live. Older children can experiment making their owns Podcasts. All children have the cerebral capacity to learn a second language in the first years of life.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB">Bilingual children are in contact with a second language from an early age and are developing more or less parallel both languages. When reaching an adult age a child which was educated bilingually has the capacity to dominate both languages. But not only bilingual children can take advantages from the early learning of a second language. Children who do not have a real tie with a foreign language can also from early on take advantage of learning a second language.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB">The following are some recommendations to begin the education of a second language at an early age:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB"><strong>1. Do not create false expectations</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB">The children who are in contact with a second language, without the intensity of a truly bilingual education, cannot reach results as bilingual children. Parents must be clear and not foster false illusions, like for example thinking that the children with a few hours of English a week will be able to speak this language in a fluid way.</span></p>

Such contact can be through the family, the Day-care center, a nanny or a private teacher. Studies have demonstrated that a child needs an affective direct bonding with the language to learn.</span></strong></p>

<p><strong><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB">There are a variety of products in the market like books, CDs, DVDs, and games that have been conceived for learning of a second language. Also there exist many other products that can be used to accustom a child to a second language, without being explicitly being created for this purpose, such as children’s songs, audio stories, DVDs (why not check out if the favourite DVD of your children have other languages as well – this works particularly well as the child knows already). All these materials are ideal to wake and to maintain the interest of the child for a language; they reinforce the learning in a playful way.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB"><strong>4. Start as soon as possible</strong></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB">The best moment to start is before the child begins to speak. In this way, the child has the possibility to hear the second language and its rhythms for a long period of time, like a bilingual child before they can start to speak. In nonbilingual children this can be obtained through materials like CDs of rhymes and songs or with the support of mixed-language children groups, nannies, etc..</span></strong></p>

<p><strong><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;" lang="EN-GB"><strong>Between 0 to 3 years:</strong> CDs of children’s music and rhymes are excellent allies. Small babies and children thus learn from them melody and the real speed and rhythm of the language. There are some DVDs for babies. Bilingual games for babies exist in great variety, for example the ones produced by CHICCO and V-TECH. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">In my search for interesting materials to reinforce the languages of my children, who grow up in three languages (Spanish, English German), I have resorted many times to YouTube. Some times we looked for children’s songs, other times for information on a variety of subjects and also for traditional children films. My children enjoy Youtube and I have one more support tool for having them listen to language.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>&#8220;Raising Bilingual Children: Common Parental Concerns and Current Research&#8221;</em> is an article written by Kendall King and Lyn Folge, Georgetown University and published in <strong>CALdigest</strong> and in the <strong>CAL</strong> (Center for Applied Linguistics) webpage.</p>
<p>This article shows the results of a study of 24 bilingual families with children between 0-5 years old in Washington D.C. , and also summarises previous research in bilingualism. The study comes to the following conclusions:</p>
<p>1. Bilingualism and language delay: monolingual and bilingual children meet major language development milestones at similar times.</p>
<p>2. Bilingualism and language confusion: the aproach &#8220;0ne-parent, one language&#8221;, while generally recommended, can also result in passive bilingualism. Parents in general do not need to fear language confusion if they opt for another aproach such as using the minority language at home. Parents also should think more about the quality and quantity of exposure to both languages that their children receive.</p>
<p>3.  Bilingualism and television: human interaction ist better than recorded sounds for fostering language learning.</p>
<p>4. Bilingualism and inteligence: bilingualism should not be viewed as predictor of greater intelligence or as an overall indicator of high academic performance. Bilingual children gain specific advantages in targeted areas such as greater understanding of language as an abstract system.</p>

<p>This articles speak about the advantages of  using nannies: On one side, it helps immigrant families and their descendants to help pass on heritage. On the other side, parents seek a &#8220;foreign-language nanny&#8221; to to start early with their children in learning another language.</p>
<p>The article recomends that parents look after other opportunities for their children to hear other speakers using the same language. This can be obtained through school, through visiting a restaurant, cultural center or traveling abroad.</p>
<p>The article also recomends that nannies use consistently the same language with the child to play, to sing, and  to read aloud.</p>

<p>This article speaks about the rising tendence to learn a second language in the earlier years and gives some examples about this tendency. The article reminds us that the younger the children start to learn a second language, the better it is. And also that it is better if you keep the <a href="http://www.raising-bilingual-children.com/basics/info/rules/" target="_blank">&#8220;one parent one language rule&#8221;</a>.</p>
<p>But the most  important aspect of the article it is how you teach language to your child. Johansen suggests that the best methode is making the child feel that he is only playing.  Language becomes most interesting if you use it to play instead of using serious adult-child-conversations. The author, suggests  for instance:</p>
<ul>
<li>The use of audio tapes, but limiting the length so that the child does not get bored.</li>
<li>Videos and CD-ROMs that present vocabulary,  in a funny and creative way.</li>
<li>Books, especially those that the child already knows, and likes in his predominant language.</li>
<li>Attending some kind of  language play group, were the child sing and play in other language.</li>
<li>Games which help to develop the second language.</li>
</ul>
